Welcome to The Modern Knish! I'm Sarah, a long-time vegan baker. Here you'll find classic - and modern - Jewish recipes that are 100% vegan! Get ready to create beautifully swirled babka, delicious challah, and of course, flaky, buttery knishes.

This blog is inspired by my grandmother, Goldie. A dietician and avid baker, Goldie lived by the principle of "everything in moderation...including moderation." I remember visiting her as a child and enjoying her buttery knishes, crunchy mandel bread, and sweet cinnamon-sugar cookies. Grandma Goldie taught me to take food seriously and showed me the joy in feeding others tasty, nourishing meals.

Since I transitioned to a vegan diet in 2008, I have loved exploring plant-based recipes, especially for desserts and baked goods (you might say I have a sweet tooth!). More recently, I have been drawn to baking traditional Jewish recipes - challah, babka, and more - but remaking them from a modern, vegan perspective. I hope you will enjoy baking these recipes as much as I have enjoyed creating them. Happy baking!
